I’d love to end it right there, but I can’t. It’s some OCD thing I have where I have to make one of these damn posts every Sunday. Let’s get on with it.

General Stuff:

There’s not much to say here. As I’m sure those of you who read these posts know, I was away on vacation last week. I got back Thursday night and didn’t even open / think about Flash or FlashDevelop the whole time. However I did get some things done yesterday in a two-hour period of coding I did.

Accomplished:

Saving / loading works completely.

Fixed up the “cleaning up” (memory) when a level ends.

Fixed an annoying issue where characters could get somewhat stuck in a wall corner.

To Do:

Build more levels (at least 3 more + the first boss level).

Program at least one of the bosses.

And that’s it for this week. Next week will be semi-normal in terms of progress, there are a few personal things that I think are going to eat up my time, and then the week after college starts up again.

Oh boy.

Super Happy Fun-Time Bonus Stuff!

For the pathetic lack of content in this post, I suppose I’ll try to fill it up with some link love.

RidTheWorld.org – <del>Rid</del> Brandon’s site of nonsense. He’s a good friend of mine and is in the process of finishing an Alan Wake tribute animation he’s been working on. Undoubtedly his best work to date.

Treasure Adventure Game – This is an indie game in progress that I came across this past week and it looks awesome. I’m honestly looking forward to playing this game as if it was a console game.

Notch Livestream – I spent most of Saturday just watching Notch (Minecraft’s Notch) working on his game entry for the 48 hour Ludum Dare competition. It was very interesting, and I’m assuming he’ll be live today too.

Minecraft Parody #14,210 – It still made me laugh, and the video / animation quality is outstanding.

Alright, before I get any more busy or procrastinate any longer, let me get this post out there. Here are just a bunch of things I’ve been meaning to post, so I figured I’d group it all into one post.

RidTheWorld.org

You should definitely check this site out. It’s the home of my lover good friend Brandon Ridener. He’s been working in Flash for as long as I have, but he’s a better procrastinator than I am. He’s just now finally getting into the groove of things – he just released his first real Flash animation “Scene of the Crime” and is already working on his second.

SMB Interview

This was a really interesting read for me. Click here to read over a transcript of an interview with the original Super Mario Bros. creators. It was really fascinating to get to see how these guys think and how they worked together to create the Mario games. Definitely worth the five minutes to look it over.

Flash MindMeld 2011

Are you interested in making Flash games? Then this page will be like gold for you. Dozens of the most famous people in the Flash gaming field contributed small 2-3 minute voice clips giving out some of the knowledge they’ve acquired throughout the years, all for free.

LOL

I’ve been laughing at this video ever since I was linked to it a few days ago by Rid Brandon. Enjoy.

Well, not my animation. Sorry to get your hopes up (LOL WHO AM I KIDDING?)

No but seriously. My good friend Brandon has released his first real animation ever on NewGrounds today. Check it out – Scene of the Crime.

Go and five it up so it’ll get noticed and possibly even front-paged.

Even though he’s worked in Flash for almost as long as I have, he’s never actually released anything besides miscellaneous tests and whatnot, so this is quite the momentous occasion. He also has a site (RidTheWorld.org) which currently is actually more inactive than mine (gasp). Hopefully that’ll change in the future though.

Alright, that’s it. Go check it out and stuff.

So I thought I’d make a post about Minecraft since it seems to be biggest thing in the world at the moment. I decided to purchase myself a copy and give it a whirl even though I didn’t exactly know what the game was about. (Honestly I still don’t get it.) I figured since it was a successful indie game it’d be in my best interest to check it out.

I may have become a tad addicted for a few days – just a little.

My awesome house.

I still don’t get the idea of multiplayer. All I see are a bunch of people talking to each other about finding lava, whining about losing their diamonds, and asking “who griefed my house?”. However it does get addicting once you start building things. I don’t know why exactly, but it got me hooked for a while there.

This actually leads me to my next topic on “procrastination”… You see, since I can’t play Minecraft and work on my game at the same time – production came to somewhat of a standstill there for a good 3 or 4 days. It sucks, yes, but I’m getting back into the groove of things.

Don’t Panic

And we officially have a title for my top down defense/shooter game – “Don’t Panic.” It may seem a bit odd, but it fits with what I have in mind. It’s more of a comedic title/game than anything else.

New Game

Well, it’s not technically new. Hero Dude has been mentioned a lot in the past. And that eventually led to the game being scrapped due to lack of ideas. But now that’s all changed. I’ve always wanted this game to be my main game, the one I make sequels for and whatnot.

Anyway, I had an epiphany earlier today and the game is officially back on. It’s still in the planning stage where I will be doing tons of writing and sketches of things before I dive into actual coding. (Also I want to finish Don’t Panic before I seriously begin anything else.) Look out for this one, as it is going to be my biggest project ever.

Well that’s it for the updates today. I’ll have the new Weekly Game Update up over the weekend. BYE!

“Oh look at Ralph, he’s abandoned another blog after promising to update it.”

Shut up Eternal. No I didn’t. I said I’m going to have a more relaxed update schedule on this blog compared to ForTheLose.org.

Anyway, I got lots of stuff to talk about today, so I guess the wait paid off (if you care, I suppose).

Progress Being Made on “Weapons on Wheels”

Yeah, in case you hadn’t figured it out yet, the game I’m working on is titled “Weapons on Wheels.” Though the Christmas/New Years holidays definitely put a damper on my productivity, I’m back in the groove.

I’ve spent a good chunk of the past few days smoothing over the current wall of code and adding new features. In case you don’t know, this whole game is a tribute/remake of one of most favorite Sega Genesis games I played when I was younger (and still do today), “Combat Cars” (video). I swear, I can waste hours playing that game.

Epic Time-Waster, “Captain Forever”

I stumbled across this amazing Flash game from the blog over at MondoManiatrics. The game is called “Captain Forever” (link). Basically, you start off as a small one-piece ship out in space. Your main mission is to collect pieces of enemy ships you destroy, connect them to your ship to make it more powerful, rinse and repeat until you’re pretty much unstoppable. I can’t tell you how many hours I’ve wasted on this game in the past week. Go ahead and try it out.

Small Side Project(s?)

Today I decided I’m going to start creating some small files to put up for sale on the ActiveDen marketplace. I figured if I was able to make some good money from the ThemeForest marketplace with my web design nonsense, why not try to make some money with their Flash-based counterpart? For example, tonight I’m spending my time creating a very nice-looking and functional preloader. I figure it’s worth a shot to see if I can get a few sales from it, and if so, I’ll probably make some more similar items.
